Italy boasts a modern rail network of high-speed trains in major routes connecting its largest cities. In particular the Elettro Treno Rapido (Rapid Electric Train [ETR]), series first introduced in 1993 has since grown to become Italy's flagship high speed locomotive. The ETR-500 trains are electric trains that have a highest possible speed of 300km/h in normal operation, although some have been known to set speed records as fast as 355 kms/h in certain lines. The first original generation ETR-500 trains were delivered in between 1992 and 1996 while the second generation of ETR-500 locomotives were delivered between 2000 and 2005, having undergone many changes in its design to better take advantage of Italy's newly specially constructed high speed rail networks. The first generation ETR-500 has also undergone upgrades and refurbishment to increase speed.
These trains are the epitome of comfort and style. At 300 kms/h, it has become the fastest way to travel on land in Italy, and travellers reach their destinations faster than ever before. Inside the ride is whispering smooth as the train is electrically propelled. Major routes for the ETR-500 are Milan-Rome Termini, Chiusi-Milan, Milan-Venice, Florence-Naples, Venice-Rome Termini, Milan-Naples, Bologna-Rome Termini, Milan-Salerno, and Milan-Rome Termini. More routes are planned to be added with the ongoing construction of Italy's high-speed rail network.
Despite there is a brad culture of caring for the environment, most Italian citizens take the ETRs to transport themselves to and from work and between cities in an efficient and fast way, so if you as a tourist are willing and eager to experience life in Italy, venture and take the ETR.
